Smoke coming from under the hood, is this an exhaust thing or something worse?

Noticed a bit of smoke drifting up from around the front of my car after I parked yesterday, and it had a sharp smell to it, kind of like burnt rubber mixed with something else I can't quite place. The car's a 2014 Sunny, nothing fancy, but it's my only transport and I can't afford for it to die on me. A colleague said it might be an exhaust leak near the engine bay, but I always thought exhaust problems showed up at the back of the car, so now I'm confused and a bit worried it's something more serious. Still not sure if smoke up front points to exhaust or if I should be thinking about the engine instead. Anyone had smoke like this and figured out what it was? I'm tempted to just drive it to a garage but scared of making it worse on the way.
