How do you actually verify a workshop is using genuine parts before agreeing?

How do you actually verify a workshop is using genuine parts before agreeing?

Had a situation last year where I paid for what I thought were original parts and later found out from another mechanic that they were cheap copies. Since then I've been paranoid about this whole thing. My A5 needs a water pump replacement soon and I refuse to go through that again. A colleague told me about Genuine parts auto repair near ICAD and said the place is transparent about showing you the boxes and part numbers before installation. That sounds great in theory but I want to know if that's actually how it works in practice or if I'm going to get the usual vague answers. Do you guys ask to see the parts before they go in? And is there a way to check authenticity after the fact, like a serial number or something? Not trying to be difficult with the workshop but I've been burned once already.
